Astrology & Geometry: Pisces are said to be compassionate, trusting, self-sacrificing, and imaginative. Pisces is the twelfth house of the zodiac, the house of the subconscious, secrets, and self-renewal. The twelfth house is represented by the twelve-sided linear shapes radiating from the seal’s head and the twelve circles surrounding it.
In Celtic tree astrology, the Seal is associated with the Ash sign for those born February 18- March 17.

Zoology: Seals are highly intelligent animals capable of learning a type of sign language and imitating human speech. Unfortunately for them, they are also very trusting of humans which contributed to the species’ significant decline when they were nearly hunted to extinction for their fur and blubber.

Folklore: Seals appear in Norse and Celtic folklore as shape-shifting Selkies, whose stories often involve the Selkie being tricked into marriage by someone who steals their magical seal skin when they are in human form. The Inuit worship the sea goddess Sedna who often appears in seal form. There are many versions of her story, all of them sad, in which Sedna trusts someone and is tricked, and during an escape she clings to a canoe and her fingers are chopped off, creating the seals, walruses and whales.

Herbalism: Marshmallow is a flowery herb native to Europe, Western Asia, and Africa that grows in marshes. It is used in herbalism to soothe skin irritations and sore throats.* The sugary treat sharing the marshmallow’s name used to be made from a concoction of its root, but modern day marshmallows no longer include any herbal ingredients. Its Latin name “Althea” means “to heal.”
