Astrology & Geometry: Sagittarius is a sign associated with adventure, luck, freedom, and risk-taking. Sagittarius is the ninth house of the Western Zodiac, concerned with spirituality, education, long-distance travel and philosophy. The ninth house is represented with nine rays of light, nine leaves, and the nine-sides geometric shapes in the painting.

Zoology: The Salamander is able to regenerate lost limbs, and they contain a powerful poison which they can shoot at predators. Many species are brightly colored, using a defense mechanism known as aposematism to advertise its toxicity. Salamanders are able to regenerate complex tissues and entire limbs and are able to recover from any damage.

Folklore: The folklore tales of the salamander are often exaggerations of it’s natural qualities and behaviors. Salamanders often make their homes in rotting logs, which when placed on hearth fires would cause it to appear as if the salamander was born from the flames. They were thought to breathe fire, put out fire, contain toxins so strong that they could poison an entire tree or well of water, were often depicted as fantastical chimeras, and were associated with witchcraft.

Herbalism & Magic: Foxgloves are unique in that they are highly poisonous and potentially deadly, but also can have medicinal benefits. They were historically used to treat epilepsy and heart conditions and have been synthesized into Digoxin, a commonly prescribed pharmaceutical.*
