Astrology: Capricorns are thought to be hard working, resourceful, frugal, and responsible.

Zoology: Vultures are large scavenger birds that live across all continents except for Australia and Antarctica. Their diet of carrion and association with death has given them a negative reputation in some cultures, but they are truly amazing birds that perform a necessary function. Vultures are resourceful. They take nothing, and efficiently use what they are given. They are carnivorous but do not kill, feeding only on carrion. They have a unique digestive system that can digest bones and are immune to many diseases and bacteria. By consuming diseased carcasses, they benefit the terrestrial ecosystem by decreasing the spread of bacteria and diseases. They are resourceful in flight too, alighting using as little energy as possible by using their ability to see heat thermals- currents of warm air that push upward. Once airborne, vultures can coast for up to 10 miles without flapping their wings.

Folklore & religion: Vultures represent purification, renewal, and connection to the afterlife. They are associated with Egyptian gods Isis and Nekhbet, and Greek war god Ares & his Roman counterpart Mars.

Botany: The Elder tree grows on all continents except for Antarctica. It can grow in poor quality soil and can even take root upon other trees forming an epiphyte or “flying tree.” The bark of decaying elder trees also makes a good “nurse log” where new trees can take root and grow. Elder berries are used in medicinal herbalism to relieve cold & flu symptoms and can be made into jams, jellies, soup, wine, and flavoring for alcohol.*
