Zoology: Bears are found throughout Europe, Asia, and North & South America. They are notable for their large size, slow movement, and the northern species’ process of hibernation through the winter. These bears innately know when it is time to feast in the fall, when it’s time to sleep in the winter, and time to wake in the spring. They tend to move slowly unless provoked or threatened, and when moved to action they are swift and unstoppable. Bears mostly feed on leaves, roots and tree nuts.

Folklore: The Bear is associated with the Greek goddess Artemis and the Celtic Goddess Artio. The Celts and Greeks both associated the Hazel Tree with intelligence, wisdom and creativity. Mercury’s Caduceus was said to be made of Hazel, and the Hazel nut bestowed the world’s knowledge to legendary Gaelic hero Fionn Mac Cumhaill after he ate a salmon who had consumed Hazel nuts from the trees that grew around the Well of Wisdom.
