Astrology & Geometry: Cancers are considered nurturing, family oriented, protective, and intuitive. Cancer is the fourth sign of the Western Zodiac, associated with home life, childhood, parental relationships and parenthood. The fourth house is represented with the four circles surrounding the swans.

In Celtic Astrology the Swan is associated with the sign of Vine for those born September 2-29.

Zoology: Swans are often used as a symbol of love, fidelity and nurturing. Pairs will mate for life and their courtship involves the swans iconically facing each other, their necks forming the shape of a heart. Both swan parents will build a nest and raise the babies (known as cygnets), but the mother spends the most time with them, leading them to food and watching over them, and tucking them under her wings when they sleep. Swan parents spend 6-9 months raising their cygnets, which is much longer than most water fowl. Swan mothers will carry their cygnets on their backs, or be seen swimming with them following her in a line. In addition to being nurturing, swans can also be very aggressive if they feel their cygnets are threatened. They will attack with their beaks and hit any perceived threat with their strong wings.

Herbalism: The fluff from cattails has been used by Native Americans for pillow stuffing, insulation, and healing wounds. Cattails are a food source for swans and other aquatic birds and can be eaten by humans. Their leaves and stalks can be used for making tools or weaving, and produce an antiseptic sap.*

Folklore: Swans appear in folklore from Greece, Ireland, Scandinavia, America, and India.
