Astrology & Geometry: Leos are considered to be enthusiastic, affectionate, dramatic, and outgoing. Leo is the fifth house of the Western Zodiac, which presides over leisure, enjoyment, and creativity. The number five is represented by the five pentagonal lines radiating from the Starling and the five pentagons surrounding it.

Zoology: Starlings are very vocal birds with beautiful songs. They are able to accurately imitate human voices, melodies, and mechanical noises. They live together in groups of thousands of birds called “murmurations” and have beautiful iridescent plumage. Starlings are native to Eurasia & Africa and have become an introduced (and invasive) species in North America and Australia. Sixty birds were released in America in 1890 and now number in the millions throughout the country. Unfortunately, they are responsible for the decline of many native bird populations due to their competition for nesting sites.

Folklore: Starlings appear in the Welsh Mabinogion and Japanese Ainu Folklore.

Herbalism & Magic: Licorice herb has a sweet flavor similar to the modern candy that still shares its name. It’s used medicinally for raising blood pressure and curing coughs & sore throats and makes a great tea for singers.* European folk magic & Hoodoo practices both use licorice for love spells.
