“Take the Yellow Line to the Red Line…”

This image was created after visiting New York with the University of Hartford Limited Residency MFA Illustration program. I wanted to capture the glow of electric lights at night, the rectilinear qualities of the Art Deco architecture, and the overlapping colored lines shown in subway maps.

Created in embroidery floss and assorted metallic fabrics, I used minimal shading on the foreground to keep the shapes flat. The embroidered lines transition from building outlines to underground angles to loose ends.

First exhibited in October 2015 through Ghost Gallery at Solo Bar, Seattle.

2014, Acrylic paint, fabric, and embroidery floss, 10x15"
